Pedal-Powered Submarine

At the last Paris Air Show a submarine with a pedal drive was introduced. The vessel under the name Scubster was engineered by Stephane Rousson and Minh-Loc Truong. The construction uses Strida bike parts and the hull is made of carbic epoxy. The maximum speed is 10 km/h. More information…

NPO Saturn Signed a Contract for Engineering of Marine Gas-Turbine Engines

In June NPO Saturn won a tender for engineering of marine gas-turbine engines (GTE) opened by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade. On June 28, the Marine Program Directorate of the Commercial Department of NPO Saturn signed the contract for engineering of marine 16 and 25 MW two-spool dual fuel gas-turbine engines with endurance of up to 100,000 hours. Quantum Activators

Seeking cost reduction ship owners and power plant manufacturers use cheap high-viscosity hydrocarbon fuels and search for technologies that lower fuel consumption. Ship diesel engines use mixtures of distillate fuels and high-viscosity cracked residues. Generally, mixtures of viscosity from 180 to 700 cSt are used. With viscosity increase, amount of fuel oil grows and fuel quality lowers which could be explained by low hydrogen content (as compared to crude oil) and respective lower calorific efficiency.
