The propulsive system is an executive element of the ship energy system. It is used to convert mechanical energy into vessel moving work. The propulsive unit together with the hull form the ship propulsive system.

This system consists of several parts. They are a ship hull, main engine forming part of the ship power plant, propulsor, shaft line and main power transmission.

The task of raising efficiency of propulsive complexes is very important. The main methods in this field are upgrading of efficiency of the propulsor or engine, optimization of the hull shape. All kinds of research are performed, various parts of the hull are modified, vessels become narrower, are equipped with breakwaters, bulb fore end, etc. Besides, designers try to decrease ship vibration and water resistance, experiment with propeller screw dimensions, number and rotating direction.

Ship electric propulsive systems are very promising. Being equipped with water-jet propulsors, such vessels are able to accelerate up to 60 knots.
