Project: using bio-diesel instead of conventional diesel fuel at a real vessel

Lloyd’s Register is to play a key role in the programme for testing bio-diesel workability as motorboat engine fuel. The scheduled duration of the programme is 2 years.
The tests are to be performed at Maersk Kalmar container carrier. In part, the project is financed by the Government of the Netherlands and Maersk Maritime Technology, affiliate of Maersk Company.
The bio-diesel name is FAME (fatty acid methyl esters). The acronym can also be translated from English as “fame, publicity”.
The fuel is to be produced from plants specially grown in a certain region or of spent fuel.
The testing is to begin with adding 5-7% of bio-diesel to conventional diesel fuel.
It would be perfect to use bio-diesel as a pollution-safe fuel. Though, this bio-fuel has some shortages, of that high cost and limited availability are to be put emphasis to.
