Sovcomflot tanker defeats armed attack in Indian Ocean
The crew of tanker “NS Century” owned by Novoship, a member the group of companies Sovcomflot, is reported by the Press Service of the shipping company to have defeated the armed attack in Indian Ocean.
The incident happened 40 nautical miles away the coast of India on February 16. The tanker’s crew alerted after they had noticed 3 boats heading for the ship.
According to the company Press Service, “After the on-board armed security had fired a series of warning shots into the air the boats turned and went away. Although there is no confirmation of the fact that they were pirates who approached the tanker, the company’s management thanked the captain and the crew for vigilance and right tactic.”
Sovcomflot is among the five world’s major tanker companies. 100 percent of the company’s shares belong to the state. Its fleet accounts for 132 ships, 126 of which are owned by the company itself. Their total deadweight is 9.4 million tons. The company’s current shipbuilding programme includes 28 tankers of 2.8 million DWT in total.
